Are you someone who loves steaks, burgers, and sausages? Do you think that you need to eat meat to survive? Do you think that vegetarians and vegans are all kinds of crazy? It is true that some vegans and vegetarians overreact a bit; however, behind the craziness is a serious issue. Overconsumption of meat is a huge global problem. It’s not a secret that an overconsumption of meat can cause a variety of appearance and health issues. Obesity, deformed fingers, skin issues, diabetes, coronary diseases, kidney problems, and cancer are just some of these issues. The most of us think that we need to eat meat in order keep our bodies functioning every day. But, do we? In this article, we will take a closer look at this question. We’ll also look at the effects of the daily meat consumption, and why it’s wise to decrease or eliminate animal-based products.
How important is the daily meat consumption for survival?
Let´s take a closer look at whether or not we need animal-based products in order to sustain life. We need food to survive. But do we need to eat meat every day in order to survive?
Prehistoric humans ate meat and animal products because there were no other dietary options. The ability to consume animal products helped human civilization survive. However, our modern view of a meal is very different than anthropologist findings. Anthropologists believe that in paleodietary studies the proportion of animal protein (approximately 35 % – 60 %) in the prehistoric human diet may have been overestimated.
Independent of these studies is a more critical question, what is the best for my body? Protein is essential for well-functioning organs, tissues, and muscles. Although meat is a source of protein and fat, it is not the only one. A combination of legumes, grains, seeds, nuts, and vegetables can supply the right amount of high-quality protein and fat. We don´t need to overload our bodies with animal proteins. Scientists have stated that the liver and kidneys can only absorb a limited amount of protein at a time. An overload of animal protein can be toxic to these organs. This means that a protein complementation from a variety of plant sources is a better way supply your body with the necessary nutrients.
But what about micronutrients? If we cut meat from our diets, is there a risk of lowering our iron and vitamin B12 to unhealthy or dangerous levels? Vitamin B12 is stored in our liver in an amount between 2000- 4000 µg. Our body needs 2.4 µg of vitamin B12 a day and can use the stored B12 for approximately 2 to 4 years. In addition, legumes, mushrooms, grains, seeds, and nuts contain iron. Therefore, you will not starve if you cut meat from your diet for one or two weeks. Looking at these facts and at the thousand-year history of veganism and vegetarianism in the regions of Japan, China, Thailand, Malaysia, Taiwan, Vietnam, Korea, and India we can be convinced that meat is not crucial for survival.
Are we designed to eat meat?
Beyond the nutritional concerns of cutting animal products, let’s look at the anatomy of meat eating. When we comparing humans to carnivores we can see a clearer picture. From an anatomical perspective, humans are not truly designed to eat animal products, especially meat. The chart below shows the anatomic facts of the human body. Make your conclusion:
Human saliva has an alkaline ph value (5.7) and contains the enzymes Ptyalin and Amylase which make it possible to break down carbohydrates. The base ph value of human salvia makes it more difficult to break down animal protein.
The stomach of a human produces hydrochloric acid, but it is considerable than a carnivore’s production. This low level of hydrochloric acid means that a high level of meat consumption cannot be 100% digested. Consequently, the undigested portion will be stored somewhere else in the body, most notably in the arteries. The more meat a human consumes, the higher the risk of arteriosclerosis.
The human gut is long at eight to ten times longer than the body length. Meat contains a high amount of bacteria and rotten fat. In order to avoid the rotten aspects of the meat, it is usually expelled from the body as fast as possible. longer intestinal length means that meat cannot be digested as fast as possible. Consequently, the process of rottenness in the gut is unavoidable.
Human Liver, Spleen, Kidneys
The liver, spleen, and kidneys of humans do not produce the uricase enzyme, so uric acid cannot be adequately detoxified from the body. This enzyme is essential for the detoxification process of uric acid, one of the substances found in animal products. The uricase enzyme is a catalyst for the reduction and detoxification of the toxic uric acid. Consequently, uric acid builds up in the bloodstream. A high level of uric acid in the body is one of the main causes of gout, arthrosis, and kidney stones.
When looking at the anatomy of humans, we can make the following conclusion: humans are not designed to eat meat every day. Just because most humans eating meat doesn’t mean that it’s good for our bodies. Throughout history, humans have continued to do things and eat things that are unhealthy but believed to be necessary for survival. These unhealthy and potentially dangerous dishes still exist in cultures across the world. In Sweden and Norway, there is a fermented fish dish called surströmming, which gives off one of the most putrid food smells in the world. A comparable dish also exists in Korea (hongeohoe) and Japan (kusaya). In China, a dish from rotten eggs, called century egg or pidan, is considered a delicacy.
People who are unaccustomed to these dishes would rarely choose to eat them freely. But if there weren’t other options, everyone would try them to survive, much like the prehistoric human’s consumption of meat. However, eating these meals three times a day would probably cause many health problems.
In short, our anatomy, metabolic processes, and enzyme expression is made primarily for a plant-based diet. If you overload your body with food it’s not designed for on long-term, you will make it weak and sick. This overload could appear as weight gain, skin problems, hair problems, premature aging, low energy, and other health-related issues. Eating what your body is designed for will strengthen it, and keeping it healthy and young.
